{Guest Post} Wedding Photography: How To Choose a Professional and Get Value For Money

Hello lovelies!

Yes, I know, it has been a looooooong time! And, admittedly, I have no socially valid excuse for not writing anything for the last *cough* three months *cough*; so let's skip past that particular elephant in the room and get down to business!

Today's post is a guest post from fellow blogger, Maria Benson.  Maria is a professional blogger interested in finance and politics, having written several articles on such categories. She enjoys researching financial products and services and writing reviews on them. During her free time her hobbies include painting and reading. She is currently working on PPI claims and she is looking forward to posting a few articles on the subject.

And so, over to Maria for a few tips on getting the most out of your wedding photographer!

All brides know that a wedding is a “once in a life time” occasion – a joining of two hearts for life. This event brings together family members, friends and well-wishers, and couples want to capture and remember every moment of their fabulous wedding day. This is where your wedding photographer plays a huge role. There are a number of professional wedding photographers out there to select for your big day, but deciding who to choose can be a daunting task.  Below I've summarised 10 tips for ensuring that the photographer you choose is a professional.

{Photographic style}

A picture is worth a thousand words. Contact a number of wedding photographers to become familiar with the various types of wedding photography they offer, such as formal, classic, and candid photographic styles. Keep an eye on the latest trends – these can help keep your event fresh and lively.

{Experience}

The photographer you chose should, ideally, have proper experience in the wedding industry. An experienced wedding photographer will take better pictures compared to someone who photographs, for example, food or nature. Having an experienced professional photographer is essential to capturing your special moments, such as the exchanging of rings, your first dance and first kiss.

{Delivery}

Always read the small print and be sure of delivery time frames. Some photographers may take months to deliver photos due to the demands on their time or reliance on other professionals, such as album designers and printers; so if you are unwilling to wait, consider choosing someone else.

{Pricing}

Wedding photography is a costly service.  If you are working with a budget, which most brides are, contact more than one photographer to get a feel for the market. This will help you to choose an affordable photographer with good quality service.

{Contract}

Before signing a contract, make sure you read it thoroughly, and query anything that troubles you.  Should a problem arise, this document is the only thing that will safeguard you.

{Specials and discounts}

Enquire about out-of-season specials or packages - some photographers provide discounts for winter weddings or weekday weddings, and some even offer discounts if you book far in advance of your wedding date.

{Advertising}

Most, if not all, photographers use images from past events to advertise online or in magazines. If you are not comfortable with your wedding photos being used for advertising purposes, be sure to choose a photographer who allows you to opt out of any publicity for their company. At the end of the day your photographer owns the rights to any images captured on your day, so you can’t make them sign anything to ensure this doesn’t happen – it is simply a courtesy you can request.

{Appearance and dress code}

If it is important to you, always be clear beforehand how you expect your photographer to dress. Most photographers will dress in a way that allows them freedom of movement to capture those special moments but, if you ask, they will usually be happy to wear jeans and a smart shirt which won’t hinder their movements.

{Equipment}

Always ensure that your photographer uses a good quality camera with a variety of lenses and that they carry a back-up camera and memory cards in case something should go wrong.

{References}

Word of mouth is the most powerful source of information, so ask other wedding suppliers for references to good photographers, and ask potential photographers whether they can supply reference letters from previous clients. If they are not ready or willing to hand over references, ask yourself why. Also ask your photographer what their personal mission statement is – this will give you good insight into their approach to their craft. A passionate photographer will give better results than one who does it only for the money.

Your wedding day is one of those few occasions in life that you want to treasure for posterity, and your wedding photographs help to keep those memories fresh. Ensuring that you hire a good professional is essential to how you remember the experience of your day, so always be sure that the professional you've chosen is the right one for you.
